Barksdale Forward played a key role in bringing AFGSC to Barksdale and is ensuring the base has the necessary infrastructure to support new missions (such as command and control of the B-21) coming to the base.
Over the years, many key individuals and organizations contributed to the success of the Barksdale Forward mission. Particularly notable were Lt General (Retired) Edgar Harris, former 8th Air Force Commander; Murray Viser, founding President; and Don Weir Sr., Chairman of the 8th Air Force Consultation Committee. Both the Shreveport and Bossier City Chambers of Commerce also played a vital role. Present-day leaders are John Atkins, Chairman; Eric Barkley, Barksdale Forward President and COO; and Doug Rogers, Barksdale Forward Treasurer.
One of the organization’s most significant achievements was its instrumental role in working with the Congressional Delegation to secure the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) headquarters at Barksdale AFB. This milestone elevated Barksdale Air Force Base from being home to a numbered Air Force and two major bomb wings to a major Air Force command hosting the Nation’s most important mission operating long-range bomber aircraft capable of carrying nuclear and conventional munitions, Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) forces, and the National Air Operations Center (NAOC) aircraft.
