About

Barksdale Forward

OUR MISSION

To grow Barksdale Air Force Base’s role in our economy and national security, protect the operational integrity of the Base, advocate for its continued growth and investment, and educate the public on its strategic importance.

Grow

Global Reach. Global Power.

Barksdale Forward played a key role in bringing AFGSC to Barksdale and is ensuring the base has the necessary infrastructure to support new missions (such as command and control of the B-21) coming to the base.

Over the years, many key individuals and organizations contributed to the success of the Barksdale Forward mission. Particularly notable were Lt General (Retired) Edgar Harris, former 8th Air Force Commander; Murray Viser, founding President; and Don Weir Sr., Chairman of the 8th Air Force Consultation Committee. Both the Shreveport and Bossier City Chambers of Commerce also played a vital role.  Present-day leaders are John Atkins, Chairman; Eric Barkley, Barksdale Forward President and COO; and Doug Rogers, Barksdale Forward Treasurer.

One of the organization’s most significant achievements was its instrumental role in working with the Congressional Delegation to secure the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) headquarters at Barksdale AFB. This milestone elevated Barksdale Air Force Base from being home to a numbered Air Force and two major bomb wings to a major Air Force command hosting the Nation’s most important mission operating long-range bomber aircraft capable of carrying nuclear and conventional munitions, Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) forces, and the National Air Operations Center (NAOC) aircraft.

Protect

Weapons Storage & Security Forces

Without the new weapons storage and security forces facilities, Barksdale AFB would not be capable of executing its existing missions, and these missions could have been subject to realignment to bases with the necessary infrastructure.

Ultimately, Barksdale Forward serves as a vital bridge between the military and our federal representatives, advancing national defense through collaboration and advocacy. With broad influence and strong partnerships, we unite civic leaders, elected officials, businesses, and citizens in a shared mission: to champion the strategic value of Barksdale Air Force Base, expand its opportunities, and support the service members and families who call it home.

Advocate

Advancing National Defense Through Advocacy

Barksdale Forward works with the Louisiana (and other) congressional delegations to secure resources and legislation that enable the missions at Barksdale AFB to be successful.

The organization’s start was during a period of significant need for advocacy considering the Base Realignment and Closure Commission that started in 1988, leaving military bases across the country shuttered. Through strategic advocacy, community education and unwavering support, Barksdale Forward has worked for over three decades to ensure the base remains a vital asset to our region and our nation’s defense.
